Your News Olney 35 - Swanage & Wareham 19

On the way to Olney, part of Milton Keynes, Swans’ coach was involved in two traffic jams caused by accidents, one just down the road at Upton and the other on the A34, and did not arrive at the ground until half an hour before the scheduled kick off.

Starting 15 minutes late Swans played against a strong northerly wind, and in a somewhat similar vein to the previous game Swans were giving away too many penalties. Whatever Swans did seemed to result in a penalty and James Hawken, who used to play for championship side Cornish Pirates, used the wind to put the home side up 3-0 after eight minutes. This continued unabated as he kicked 6 consecutive penalties to give Olney the lead at 18-0 after 26 minutes. From a catch/drive move on Swans 5 metres line Olney scored their only try of the first half as No.8 Scott Walker powered over the line. Needless to say Hawken added the extras 25 – 0. However just before the interval a quick passage of play put Swans in the Olney 22, and the visitors fly half Charlie Parish worked his way over the try line. Phil Graves added the conversion 25 – 7 at half time.

After ten minutes of the second half Hawken added another penalty, but Swans were now taking the game to the home side, pressurising the defence. From a move down the right field after 65 minutes a scramble enabled replacement back row forward James Large, on for injured James Warren, to pick the ball up and cross the line. Phil Graves added the extras 28 – 14. With only three minutes to go Charlie Parish tried to chip the ball over the head of the on coming Olney defence, but flank forward John Robinson caught the ball , giving him a clear run in to the line for a converted try 35 – 14. Into injury time, a break down in the Olney 22 enabled Swans scrum half Scott Smyth to pick up the ball to cross in the corner leaving the final score 35pts – 19pts.
