MILLWALL Rugby Club's first XV overcame some early season jitters before finding their feet and kicking Essex Division 1 rivals Old Cooperian's into touch.

Some Millwall handling errors and number 11 Ben Smith's departure due to an ankle injury after just 10 minutes made for a nervy opening to the new season.

But the home team put aside these setbacks to run in four tries in total including a brace from flying winger James Wakefield on a warm afternoon on Millwall Park.

Ron Hamilton and Brent McMillan also touched down with fly-half Dom Sutherland converting three out of four at the kicking tee and slotting home two penalties.

Three new faces made their debuts for the club including man-of-the-match Justin Tester at number four, front row Michael Finnegan and substitute James McWalter, all acquitting themselves admirably.

While Chris Drake, building on his fine form for the club last season, pulled the strings at scrum-half, enabling Millwall's backs free rein to rack up the points.

New team manger Carl Burnett said: 'It was the first league game for the first XV and a few nerves showed through today.

'But once people found their feet, we dominated most of the game.

'There were a few errors and they were just down to nerves.

'But there were some outstanding performances, especially man-of-the match Justin Tester.'

Millwall's second XV also recorded a victory with a convincing 43-12 win over Basildon but the third and fourth teams both suffered defeats at the hands of Eton Manor and East London respectively.
