Your News Olney 24 - Reading 7

With a good home crowd due to the Vice Presidents and Sponsors Lunch, Olney were keen for a home win following their strong away win to open the Season last week, though expected nothing but a tough afternoon against the physical Reading team.

Both teams desperate to make an impression, with Reading looking the more physical and Olney looking keen to control the game and with Flanker, Charlie Belcher making some great turnovers early on allowed the backs space to make ground out wide. Readings defence however put stop to some early home tries, and a missed penalty attempt for both teams left the score sheet blank until Olneys Centre, James Hawken made a clean break and with Fly Half, Mark Marwood in support scoring his first try for Olney after joining the Club this Season. James Hawken then converted giving Olney the 7-0 advantage.

Olney seemed to have a lapse in concentration as the Reading Full Back made his way through players mid field and looked sure to score before the ball was knocked on, and from the Olney Scrum the ball was kicked up field which Scrum Half, Richard James chipped on further and with Mark Marwood in support once again scored his second try, which was again converted by James Hawken extending the home sides lead 14-0 at half time.

Reading keen to make themselves known on the field played some strong attacking phases and some weak tackles by the home side allowed the Reading Winger in to score a try which was converted by their Fly Half bringing the score close 14-7. With Scrums and lineouts not being dominated by either team, both sets of forwards had a hard afternoon of rugby with some big tackles being made and a lot of tidying up of loose balls. Though with Olney awarded a penalty for Reading not releasing the ball at a ruck, James Hawken extended the home sides lead to 17-7, and with Flanker, James Moody having a strong game, taking some big hits from the Reading forwards and repeatedly winning ball and making an impression on the game himself, Olney were awarded a scrum from a Reading knock on and Mark Marwood completed his hat trick of tries for the afternoon, followed by a James Hawken conversion extending Olneys lead to 24-7.

Reading maintained their physical game and Olney lost Charlie Belcher with a shoulder injury, and Prop, Ollie Brackenbury needed some treatment to a cut before returning to continue the game after a good afternoons performance. Olney were awarded another penalty which was not converted from half way, but held on to win their first home fixture of the season 24-7, which sees them sit second in the league table before next weeks away fixture at Reading Abbey.

As expected, a physical game of rugby which saw Captain, Chris Parnham and Flanker, James Moody have very strong individual games with some good breaks and accurate kicking by James Hawken.
