OLNEY v BUCKINGHAM 04/09/10 AWAY WIN 15-27

Olney made the short away trip to Buckingham to commence the 2010/11 season after a few pre-season fixtures, and with a good number of travelling supporters.

It was Olney that made a quick start reaching the twenty-two within seconds of kick off only to knock the ball forward. Then from Buckinghams long clearance kick the Olney forwards got back well to set up a maul and drive the opposition backwards rather easily until a player deemed to be off-side allowed the home side a penalty opportunity, though their Scrum Half missed this attempt. Both teams played some frantic rugby for a short while until the Olney forwards re-grouped and used the opportunity given of a five metre lineout from a penalty, to catch and drive with Second Row, Jack Sutton scoring. This was not converted but gave the visitors the lead they desired, and only moments later did exactly the same again with Jack Sutton twisting away from the pack to score once again. Again, no conversion was made but Olney extended their lead 0-10.

Buckinghams restart failed to reach ten metres and Olney opted for the scrum and a quick ball out allowed Olney to make a clean break through the Buckingham defence only to punish themselves with a forward pass, and with the referee playing advantage to the home side saw a lack of communication on their part as two Buckingham players clashed midfield. Eventually Buckingham managed to get together and catch some passes and their second row scored out wide, though the conversion was missed taking the score to 5-10. Though this score only remained for a moment as Olneys forwards once again dominating the maul saw new recruit Prop, Mike Ormesher score his first Olney try, which the conversion was missed once more by Fly half, Tom Taylor-Davies though stretching Olneys lead 5-15 with only minutes to go before half time. The home side had one last gasp at attack before the whistle and with numbers out wide they looked sure to score, though more handling errors on their own part allowed a try to go begging leaving Olney in the lead at the break 5-15.

The second half mirrored the first with Buckingham wasting valued opportunitys by handling errors, and Olneys forwards dominating play allowing the backs to make some clean breaks and Captain, Chris Parnham managed to score his first try of the afternoon after a good run by Winger, James Hannah. Another missed conversion but extending the visitors lead to a comfortable 5-20. Olney then lost Tom Taylor-Davies to a yellow card for killing the game whilst the home side were on the attack, and after a long attacking phase the home side were awarded a try with their Full Back finally finding a gap, this was not converted but pulled them closer 10-20.

Olney continuing to look comfortable in attack continued to press the home side and eventually Chris Parnham went over to score his second try of the afternoon with Richard James converting taking the score to 10-27, and with the home side obviously disappointed with their score they continued to give their all and were finally awarded a penalty which from a quick tap saw their Prop score a try, again the conversion was missed but pulled the final result to 15-27.

A typical first league fixture, looking very disjointed at times, leaving both teams plenty to work on before their next fixtures on Saturday, where Olney welcome Reading kicking off at 3pm.

Tries; J Sutton x2, C Parnham x2, M Ormesher
