Your News Otley 22 - Blaydon 25

Two late penalties by replacement goal kicker Dan Kyle secured a Day 1 victory for Blaydon in what was generally a scrappy affair with both sides struggling to find their form.

Joe Barker struck first for the home side, Will Nelson converting, when he capitalised on a defensive lapse, but by the interval Blaydon had built up a 5 point advantage.

In their first visit to the 22, centre Matt Clark, who had an outstanding game, ran in from 35 metres and then Chris Wearmouth stormed over from a series of forward drives with Andrew Baggett adding the points.

Otley were on top after the break, levelling through Gareth Denman before regaining the lead when skipper Jamie Sutton finished off an excellent line-out break to make it 17-12.

Back came Blaydon with the move of the game, initially engineered by Clark and twice involving Baggett who touched down under the posts and added the conversion himself. The dust had scarcely settled however when the home side struck again.

Winger Curtis Wilson hacked on from half-way to show a clean pair of heels to the Blaydon defence and at 67 minutes it was Otley in front by 22-19. With time running out Blaydon re-grabbed the initiative, two penalty attempts went begging, the kicker was changed and Kyle's brace ensured a winning start to the season.
