Bishop Auckland Rugby Club finished off their season in traditional style with their Annual Ted Robinson Memorial Sevens at West Mills last Sunday. For the first time in some years all entrants turned up and the programme kicked off on time. Two sides from Bishop and two from Durham University were joined by teams from Durham Tigers, Guisborough, Houghton and West Hartlepool Amateurs. However, it soon became a question of who could beat the students. Bishop came closest, holding the Students B squad to a 15 7 margin in the qualifying rounds. Shortcomings in pace and stamina are easily exposed in the seven a side game and the Students A squad amassed 130 points in three games while their junior colleagues, the B squad, managed 98.

Bishop Auckland and Guisborough joined the Students in the semi-finals. Guisborough were soon in trouble against the B team and eventually went down 33 14. In the other semi Bishop enjoyed a fleeting moment of success as they scored first but, in spite of some heroic defence, their lead was short lived and eventually they went down 21 5, leaving the two student sides to contest the final. The strength of rugby at the University was apparent as there was little to choose between the sides, but eventually it was the A squad who - yet again - carried off the Cup with a highly entertaining 26 21 victory.
