Your News Darlington Mowden Park 3XV 39 - Newton Aycliffe 3

With Aycliffe having the chance to win the Durham Junior League, Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club travelled down the road to Mowden Park to play the hosts third team. Aycliffe drew their home game against the same opponents, but were faced with a stronger, younger team at Yiewsley Drive.

Aycliffe began well and, with Mowdens early handling letting them down, a penalty kick from Gareth Parsonage gave the visitors a lead. Aycliffe continued to press and were awarded another penalty, but Luke Tinkler lost his footing on the muddy surface and was unable to add to the score. It soon became obvious that Mowden had a star player in their left winger, and it was he that gave the home team the lead by bursting down the touchline with speed and strength to score the games first try. Two further tries followed and the half time score was 17 3.

Aycliffe continued to battle hard and the forwards gained more ball, the scrummage stabilised and they had the edge in the lineout, where Neil Morgan was able to make the most of some poor throw-ins. Tinkler came close to scoring with a good run, but he was just caught before the line. Paul Ellis also had some powerful runs and Deryk Cairns was his usual presence in the loose. The pace of Mowden out wide however, was just too much for Aycliffe to cope with and four further tries were added to make the score 39 3 at the close.

Despite the scoreline, this was a good performance by Aycliffe against the strongest opposition faced this season. On the 26th April, Aycliffe are playing at Huddersfield on their annual tour. More information is available on the website at
