‘End of Season lesson in Tempo and Support play’

Yatton 1st XV was probably glad to see the end of their league season. Knowing they were already relegated, something which has never happen during the club’s forty year history, matters were made worse with their regular 1st XV Hooker and his replacement not being available for this season’s final game. With both the 2nd & 3rd XV sides playing, the 2nd XV having a chance of promotion, the only option was to move a Prop over.

But Yattons problem in this game was never in the set pieces, where they again more than held their own, it was in not having the confidence, tempo and support play demonstrated by their local opposition from over the River Avon.

The Mouth clocked up points at the rate of one per minute until halftime. Six tries, four conversions and a penalty conversion piled on the agony for the home side. All tries coming from the back division except the last one making the score line 0-41 at the break. But Yatton had encroached within Avonmouth’s 22 on a couple of occasions, only to falter yards from the try line.

Having learned to better cope with Avonmouth’s pace and open play support, the first 15 minutes after the turnaround elapsed with no more scoring for the visitors.

Yatton’s best chance of a clear and decisive try, caused by a well read interception and masterly juggling of the ball, was stopped in full flow by an adjudged forward pass.

Avonmouth finished off their display in the final quarter with four more tries and three conversions. Again all the tries coming from the backs except for a breakthrough by a Flanker and another from the Scrum-Half’s charge down.

Meanwhile Yatton’s 2nds beat Bristol Harlequins 63-7 and Old Sulians gave Yatton 3rds a ‘Walk Over‘ victory after being unable to raise a side.

As the season draws to a close the Under 17s are scheduled to meet Thornbury at home next Sunday, likewise the Under 15s entertain Bristol Harlequins. The Under 13s travel to Kingswood and the Minis & Midis are at Chew Valley.
