Longton 18 (Tries: Moss. Thompson. Cons: Swetman. Pens: Swetman, Pointon)

Peterborough 34 (Tries: Ciuchlejus 2, Hodges, Brudnell, Guseinov, Kells. Cons: Chawson-Chan 2)

Peterborough confirmed their Midlands Division One league status for next season by scoring six tries in their emphatic 34-18 win away at Staffordshire-based Longton last Saturday afternoon, writes Phil Elmer.

Being just above the relegation zone in the league Borough still had to be sure of a win at the potteries club to guarantee avoiding the drop and they did that in style, despite trailing for most of the match.

A strong crosswind at Longtons new Trentham Fields home ground made constructive rugby extremely difficult as did the numerous yellow cards unnecessarily handed out by an over-zealous referee in a match that was simply very competitive.

Borough fell behind to a penalty from home centre Mike Swetman in the opening minute before replying just 3 minutes later as scrum Paul Humphrey made a superb break for lock Mark Hodges to claim a try from short range.

Ben Chan added the conversion points as Borough moved ahead to 7-3.

The home side fought back on 9 minutes when prop Jez Moss touched down and Swetman added the conversion points to put Longton back in front at 10-7, but Moss was to play little more in the game as he was given his marching orders 12 minutes later for dissent.

On the half hour Longton moved further ahead with Rich Thompson winning the race for a dubious touchdown chasing a kick ahead to take the score to 15-7 in Longtons favour at the turnaround.

Peterborough began their fight back on 44 minutes with winger Alex Ciuchlejus fielding a well-placed kick from Chan to score in the left hand corner from 25 yards.

Ollie Pointon restored Longtons advantage to 18-12 with a superb penalty kick in the blustery conditions but it was to be their only score of the second half as Borough stepped up a gear to take advantage of having an extra man.

By now Borough were on the ascendancy and No.8 Pete Brudnell was next on the score sheet courtesy of a textbook pushover try as the Borough forwards began to exert their supremacy and close the score to just one point at 18-17.

On 60 minutes Peterborough moved back in front with burly Brudnell again driving forward to allow Chan to spin the ball to create space for Lithuanian centre Max Guseinov to scamper over from 20 yards.

Ciuchlejus picked up a long pass to claim his second try on 66 minutes again from 25 yards out and a mazy run from winger Chris Kells on the stroke of full time completed the touchdowns. Chan added one conversion attempt as Borough celebrated their seventh win from their last eight matches to retain their position in Midlands top league.

Whilst the whole team played well as unit it was Joel Burpitt who was outstanding in the back row making some tremendous tackles.

Skipper Paul Cook was full of praise for the entire squad and said its been great to lead this team throughout the season and see the spirit of the squad shone through in this must-win game. The prospects are extremely good for next season with so many new, young players making their mark.

The match was also the last for Boroughs South African player/coach Darian Uys who has decided to step down from the squad.

Uys has been an influential figure at Peterborough for the last six seasons and said it has been a pleasure to work and play with this team for several seasons and I feel that they can now go on to push for National league status. I wish them well.

This win sees Peterborough completing their Midlands Division One league fixtures in eighth place winning half of their matches.
