Your News South Woodham Ferrers 14 - Canvey 46

Woodham were unable to carry over the festive mood from

the previous days wedding of Mr and Mrs Duggan as Canvey

proved to be worthy promotion contenders. Against the run

of play Woodham opened the scoring, when Andy Williams on

on his long overdue return intercepted the ball and sprinted

away to score. Kilbey kicked the extras 7-0. Under pressure

from a buoyant Canvey pack Woodham's penalty count began

to rise. Two penalties from the visitors closed the gap before

Woodham suffered the first of their three yellow cards. Canvey's

first try came after their scrum half dived over from close range.

Unable to gain any forward momentum, fullback Dukelow took

a quick tap penalty and broke free, his inside pass found Duggan

who in turn found Gateson to score. Kilbey's kick was good again.

14-13. On the stroke of half time Canvey scored a well worked

try off of a lineout.

Half time 14-20.

A dominant Canvey pack began to control all aspects of the game

and with the loss of players from yellow cards Woodham were

being driven off the ball with frequent ease. Canvey extended

their lead, when from a powerful scrum their number 8 crashed

over. Canvey's game plan of tight rugby starved Woodham of

any ball and thus nullified any chance of allowing the home teams

creative back line to shine. Two further two tries followed for the

visitor as they managed to put a complete strangle hold on the

game. Final score 14-46.

With the lack of first team players at training over the last few

months the recent performances should be of no surprise.
