‘3 Yellow Cards for frustrated College Pack’

Village side and basement club Yatton could hardly have been expected to match the full-time college boys for athleticism and skill, but in set pieces they did match them – and some.

The home side’s ability to trouble their visitors in scrums was a niggling factor for the undefeated team, and although at half-time the score line was 6-21, Hartpury’s three converted tries had all come from their quickness in open play and invariably gifted clearance kicks against Yatton’s two converted penalties with their spirited attacks falling short after effective tackles.

The first half finished with Yatton’s No4 being sin-binned.

Two minutes after the break the four hours every day training college boys were on the board again with another converted try, taking advantage of a missed long ball in a Yatton lineout. But Yatton’s reply was a penalty minutes later.

On 50 minutes, Yatton’s all-committed best play attack within the visitor’s 22 was spoiled by a telegraphed pass. The interception resulted in a converted try and another try deep in the corner minutes later to bring the score to 9-40.

In front of their loyal supporters, on this Six Nations Saturday, Yatton gave their second best home display of the season.

Although Hartpury added two more converted tries during the remaining 25 minutes the home sides refusal to ‘rollover’ but instead mount more attacks of their own received compliments from several travelling parents.

Through the final half-hour the college’s frustrated players in the pack received three yellow cards as No’s 3, 8 and 4 were all sent to the bin in separate incidents in open play when the game was already well won.

Yatton’s own Wilco, normally a second XV player in the pack, was voted the outstanding Player of the Match.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV travel to fellow league strugglers Torquay. The 2nds are scheduled to have a friendly also at Torquay. While the 3rds entertain Nailsea & Backwell 2nds in a league fixture.

On Sunday the Under 17’s travel to Gordano. The Under 15’s are home to Chippenham while the Midis & Juniors are scheduled to be at Minehead.
