IN their first ever season Millwall Rugby Club’s fourth team have been crowned league champions.

The side, known as the ‘Odd Socks’ because of their official dress code, was formed at the start of the 09/10 season to cope with the burgeoning numbers at the Isle of Dogs Club, but they have tasted immediate success on the field, clinching victory at the top of Essex Merit Table League Eight.

Manager Barry Gray said: “I am extremely proud to have been the Odd Socks’ player manager this year. The support I have had from all the players has been outstanding everyone pulls together as a team should do.

“Being one of the social sides within the club we have had a great turn out every week we have played, fielding on average 20 players each game. Being the fourth fifteen in a club like Millwall has added bonuses as well because we get to see the new stars coming through and the old sweats coming back, so there is a great balance of youth and experience.”

The team has played 16 games this season, winning 13 of these, and they are still hungry for more silverware in the division cup which is still to play for.

Mr Gray added: “The diversity of ages and abilities we’ve had is a good way to forge a team. Our youngest player this season was 17 and our oldest was, shall we say to save his blushes, in his mid 50s.

“The ethos is if you having a bad game the other 14 players on the pitch rally round because they know you will have a better one the following week.”
