In front of 350 spectators, home side Yatton kicked off to a false and nervous start.

Quicker to the breakdown ball, the visitors Sidmouth forged in to the lead with two penalties within the first ten minutes.

With both teams looking for their first win of the season, battle raged between the two basement clubs for the next half hour with Yatton missing their chance to get points.

Sidmouth full-back Tom Whelan gathered with skill a chip over attack on the halfway line and went down the wing to his try. Glen Channing converted from way out at 40 minutes.

Scrum George Osborne converted his first penalty in first half injury time and Yatton finished on the attack turning around three points to 13.

For the first five minutes after the break Yatton’s habit of kicking away possession nearly cost them dear as fit Sidmouth relished the attacking chance.

But five minutes in Osborne’s penalty flew over the bar and Yatton’s down the slope open play attack clicked into gear.

During the next quarter hour deft hands and pace put away three converted tries for the home side. The first from Sam Osborne followed by wing Glen Jones and then George Osborne. Yatton’s self-belief was back and home supporters were lifted.

Sidmouth were resolute to the end and unfortunate that a dropped ball from a defensive tackle, on the try line, robbed them of a try as they kept Yatton under pressure deep into injury time.

This Saturday is the first ‘3 mile’ local derby of the league season. Village Team Yatton, with their first win of the season now under their belt, travel into town to meet Clevedon who are fresh from their convincing win over Gloucester side Chosen Hill.

Meanwhile Yatton’s 2nd XV are away to St Bernadettes and the 3rd XV entertain Oldfield at home.

On Sunday Yatton Diamonds are scheduled to entertain Thornbury Under 15s at home, as are the youngmen of the Yatton Under 15s squad. Yatton’s Under 13s have also invited home Weston Hornets and incredibly all of Yatton’s Midi and Mini sides have asked Gordano to come along! – it all has the makings of another enjoyable and typical Sunday at Yatton RFC...... full of lively energetic kids, perplexed parents and squeezed parking.
