After last week's extremely disappointing performance at Aberdeen, the

Hawick team were eager to make amends and what better place to do it than at

Mansfield Park on a beautiful Spring afternoon in a League match against the

Auld Enemy, Gala. The biggest crowd in years turned up to hopefully witness

a classic Border Derby between these two teams but sadly it was Gala who

took all the plaudits after the home side produced yet another very below

par display, with little evidence of the form required to make the step up

to Division One. The backs lacked any direction seen in earlier matches and

dare it be said that the now long gone John Coutts was sorely missed in the

centre to produce that vital piece of magic to open up the opposition

defence. The forwards just about held their own against the Gala eight but

in the end it was the Maroons who certainly deserved their biggest victory

over the Greens.

Gala were in complete control after the first half, leading by 21 points

without reply through three penalties and two tries of which one was

converted.

Hawick came more into the match in the second half but again, unforced

errors were their downfall with numerous dropped passes and losing the ball

in contact situations. A Neil Renwick penalty and a converted Bruce McNeil

try were all Hawick had to show for afternoon's efforts and Gala slotted

another couple of penalties to emerge worthy winners by 27 points to 10.
