WEYMOUTH opened the new Dorset & Wilts One South season with an emphatic 32-0 win at title rivals and near neighbours Swanage & Wareham Seconds.

After a tense opening half-hour the only score Weymouth had to show for all their possession was a Tim Peplow penalty.

But then wing Will Quick latched on to a poor pass, beat three defenders and ran in from halfway before Peplow completed the first-half scoring with another penalty.

Weymouth were again dominant in the second period but this time made greater inroads in the Swans’ defence. Quick again showed his opposite number a clean pair of heels to get on the end of a sweeping backs move and score in the corner, with Peplow adding the extras.

And the Weymouth winger notched his hat-trick 10 minutes later with a carbon copy of his second try. And once again, Peplow kicked the conversion to increase the Sea-siders’ impressive lead.

Weymouth were now starting to play with freedom and put together some fantastic passages of play culminating in veteran Dave Allan rounding his opposite wing to score in the corner – ensuring that he made the scoresheet for the 20th season in succession.

Peplow completed the scoring with another fine conversion.

The Seasiders’ new captain Mark Sample was impressed by his charges’ display. He said: “We lost 29-0 here last year which probably cost us the league, so to turn that around just shows what a good performance this was.

“This is a great day for Weymouth RFC as we put out three sides on the same day, the first time that has happened since I was a colt.

“Credit must go not only to the players but the quality of coaches we have assembled at the club. I think this could be the start of something special.”

The seconds, led by Nathan Allan, won 62-5 at home to Swanage & Wareham Fourths in Dorset & Wilts Three South while the newly-formed thirds lost 47-0 at Wincanton.
