Newton Aycliffe 19 Durham City 3rds 5

Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club won their 7th game in a row with a home victory over a strong Durham City side at Moore Lane. A squad of 19 was available for this friendly, with Darren Hogg making his second appearance at loose-head prop and featuring the return of Chris Brown. Durham City included a number of experienced players and had been performing well since Christmas, having been on an unbeaten run of their own, and brought a large playing squad with them.

Aycliffe played with the strong wind behind in the first half, but had to weather some early pressure before the forwards found their way into the game. Good rucking and lineout play were instrumental in Aycliffe gradually finding their way into a number of attacking positions, and Paul Ellis opened the scoring by breaking back through the City midfield defence to score under the posts. Gareth Parsonage added the conversion. Durham struck back and nearing the end of the half scored a try of their own, when taking advantage of a player down injured to score in the corner. The second Aycliffe try was almost identical to the first as, again, Ellis took advantage of weak tackling and Parsonage once more converted. The score at the break was 14 5.

Facing a strong wind in the second half, Aycliffe knew that they would have to battle to maintain their lead, but with the forwards still going strong, they had the balance of play, even when a blizzard threatened to cause the games abandonment. A sharp break by Ryan Milford saw him brought down 10 metres from the line but good rucking saw quick ball passed to Andy Newman who added Aycliffes third try. Concerted pressure from the visitors was withheld by the battling defence and a worthy Aycliffe win was achieved. By common consent this was the best performance of the season by Aycliffe who are looking to end the season with a flourish.

Anyone who would like to play at Aycliffe, of whatever standard, is welcome to attend training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Moore Lane at 7pm. On Saturday 29th March, Aycliffe visit Hartlepool 3rds for a league game, kick-off time 3pm; up-to-date information can be found on the website at
