Your News 4th April Hutton 49 - 5 Chorley

A firm pitch and a bright warm day welcomed Chorley to the home of the league leaders on Saturday and I do not know if they had a match plan but Hutton were in no mood to play anything other than fast flowing rugby that Chorley had no answer to.

With five first team regulars missing including their influential skipper Kevin Strange it was Adrian Harrison that led the team out to face a determined Chorley XV. From the kick off it was apparent that Chorley wanted to play 10 man rugby as they lacked skills and pace in the backs but had plenty of aggression in the pack. Hutton won plenty of ball from set pieces and in the loose and simply ran the ball wide to their slick backs who simply out ran the opposition and created numerous scoring opportunities. The pick of the bunch were the Craigs Mr. Cameron who had a hat trick before half time and Mr Dootson who played more outside centre the whole game than full back where he was supposed to be.

The forwards continued to take the game to Chorley and as usual were difficult to intimidate the back row of Harrison, Johnson and Noott continually drilled holes in the opposition defence and were then able to pop the ball to oncoming support. Second rows Walmsley and Ayrey had a lively first half and the front row lived up to their league reputation in the tight as well as the loose.

Hutton were also without their influential place kicker and No.10 Mr Tobutt and only 2 tries were converted.

Overall, Hutton will look at this game and will not record it as their finest performance they were guilty of over confidence at the tackle and over exuberant in trying to pop the ball to non existent support. Ball retention often went astray and Chorley achieved a number of turnovers at the breakdown simply because support was not fast enough or forthcoming. Hutton will have a real test in the Lancashire Plate against Ormskirk and will need to raise their game above this level to go through to the Semi Final.

It has to be said that Chorley played their hearts out the full 80 minutes and were never down and out, they tackled hard and the game was good spirited.

With this victory Hutton are now (mathematically) the North Lancs 2 League Champions for 2008-2009 and are to be congratulated on not only playing exceptional attacking Rugby but maintaining a defensive record that has leaked less than 100 points all season.
