After an emphatic win over bottom club Crusaders a week

earlier, it was the turn of champions elect Colchester to

visit Saltcoats. Colchester started well showing why they

are top of the league, moving the ball through phases and

with some degree of structure and were rewarded with a

well taken penalty. 0-3. Woodham, needing a win to keep

their promotion hopes alive, responded brilliantly. From a

22 drop out after Brown's penalty miss the ball was returned

by Duggan, his well timed pass released open side

flanker Guess who beat the last defender in the narrowest of

space to score. Brown's conversion was short. 5-3.

Woodham raised their intensity knocking the visitors back in

all areas of the contact area disrupting any continuity they

tried to build. Colchester moved quick ball from a good

line out to a massed back line, only to be met by a ferocious

midfield defence ably supported by a tireless back row which

turned over ball allowing a counter attack. Good passing

released winger Jones who rounded his opposite number before

going under the posts to the delight of the home crowd.

Brown converted. 12 - 3. A shocked Colchester responded but

never looked as if they would break through the home teams

defence and for their effort all they could achieve before half time

was solitary 3 points.

Half time 12-6.

Woodham's forwards continued to disrupt scrums, line outs and

battle at every breakdown forcing the visitors into errors.

Colchesters structure began to break down as well as their

discipline giving Brown 3 points from a reversed penalty. 15 -6.

Playing into a squally wind and Colchesters backs unable to make

any ground against the home teams blitz defence, the visitors forwards

resulted to picking and driving. A turn over ball at one of these

drives by Woodham's well marshalled front five allowed Woodham

to what they do best, turn defence into attack. Full back Mathews

break was stopped short but after a number of controlled forward

phases the ball was spun out to fly half Brown who squeezed over.

Brown converted 22-6. Woodham had a number of chances to

extended their lead but where thwarted by some excellent cover

tackles. Final score 22-6.

An awesome display by the whole of the Woodham team!
