Your News Westcombe Park 12 - Blaydon 10

Blaydon remain on the fringes of the battle to avoid relegation after this poor performance resulted in a narrow defeat at the hands of the team immediately below them in the table.

Playing into a gale force wind in the first half they could make little progress and it was no surprise when the home side took the lead with a 25th minute try. Their No8 Ben Lonnegan intercepting a Nick Gandy pass to race in from 20 metres, with fly-half James Whiting adding the conversion.

With 10 minutes of the half remaining Blaydon finally put together a series of forward drives which paid dividends when prop Robbie Kalbraier was driven over for his 8th try of the season. Charlie Raynor's superb conversion kick from wide out and into the teeth of the gale made it a level game at the interval with the wind advantage still to come.

Disappointingly for them Mother Nature intervened, the wind stopped and then turned, and Blaydon were up against it once more in the second half.

Having being trapped in their own 22 for a long spell they did break out to grab the lead with another tremendous effort from Raynor to make it 7-10, but Westcombe deservedly went on to take the honours.

With minutes remaining they ran a poor Blaydon clearance straight back from half-way for replacement hooker John Moyse to touch down for an unconverted score, but there was still time for one last effort from the visitors.

Sadly however Raynor was unable to pull off a third miracle and could only watch in horror as his penalty kick was picked up by the wind to sail harmlessly wide.
