Your News South Woodham Ferrers 81 - Norwich Crusaders 19

On a glorious spring day Woodham hosted bottom team

Norwich Crusaders at Saltcoats. Conditions were perfect

and with the ground hardening expectations were high

for a fast flowing game. Yet it was the visitors who opened

the scoring when a mistake from a Woodham scrum in their

own 22 by Dukelow and Bull gave, Crusaders a try

which was well converted. Woodham responded immediately

when Gateson burst through the defence to score. Brown

converted 7-7. Woodham started to take control and two

further penalties by Brown eased any early nerves. Any thoughts

of an upset were soon dispelled. With Woodham's line out and

scrum producing good ball for the backs, scores started to flow.

Williams try came after the ball was moved effectively from one

side of the pitch to the other allowing plenty of gaps in the visitors

defence. Brown converted 20-7.

Scrum half Dukelow made amends for his earlier mistake when he

spotted a gap from a ruck and sprinted 60m beating the last defender

to score under the posts. Brown converted 27 - 7. Crusaders started

to wilt and just before half time Adam Jones scored out wide after

some great passing and support play by the back line. Brown again

converted from the touch line.

Half time 34 -7.

SWF started the second half the way they finished the first. Winger

Duggan went over in the corner after some delightful passing by the

teenage front row of Gittos and Murphy. Guess scored after selling

his trade mark dummy to the last defender and captain Mcllellan

touched down after the visitors scrum was demolished allowing

no8 Bull to pick up and pass in side to the skipper. 53-7.

Woodham were now running riot. The next try was probably the pick

of the bunch although every try was a joy to watch. Straight from

the restart, the ball was collected by stalwart prop Jiggins his hard

yards set up a ruck. The ball was then moved quickly through a

number of silky forwards hands to the back line coming at pace.

Precision passing found Jones who rounded his opposite number to

score under the posts. Brown converted 60-7. Gateson scored his

second of the day after Woodham pack once again turned over the

visitors scrum giving good ball to the back line. Brown made it 8 out

of 9 . Crusaders crossed the line twice giving some joy for the visitor

after Woodham fell asleep in the sun for five minutes. After some sharp

words by skipper Mcllellan Woodham finished on a high. Firstly fly half

Brown went over after some excellent forward drives. Brown conversion

giving him a personal tally of 31 points for the day. And finally no 8

David Bull crossed the line after centre Andy Williams showed enormous

strength holding off a number of tacklers before offloading.

Final score 81-19.

A brilliant display of fast flowing rugby by both forwards and backs

lets hope it can be replicated next week when SWF entertain top

the table team Colchester at Saltcoats on Saturday 28th March.
