Kesteven Under 15 Tour to the Isle of Man

photos on the web site www.kestevenrfc.co.uk

A party of 30 from Kesteven Rugby Club, led by “Tour Judge” Mark Pargin and “Chief Prosecutor” Mark Sayle, recently embarked on a four-day tour to the Isle of Man.

Warmly welcomed by the IOM RFU, K’s had a two game schedule against Ramsay Grammar School and the Isle of Man “national” side.

Ramsay Grammar School U15 0 - 34 Kesteven U 15

On Friday morning K’s fired themselves up for their first game against Ramsay Grammar School with a visit to Laser Quest. This had the desired effect as K’s came out all guns blazing and blew away the opposition in a 34 - 0 win. Played on a gloriously sunny day but with a chill wind, K’s quickly established forward supremacy allowing the backs to continually cross the gain line. K’s dominated possession and only some spirited Ramsay defence kept the try count down to six without reply.

A night of celebration in true “Tour” fashion followed, however, K’s were mindful of the huge game against the Island “national” side the following day.

Isle Of Man U15 5 - 29 Kesteven U15

After a bit of a “lie in” and a leisurely breakfast on the Saturday morning K’s arrived for their game against the Isle of Man national side in a focused and determined mood. Weather conditions were once again ideal for rugby and K’s didn’t waste them as they carried on where they left off in their previous game. Against a physically larger pack K’s took the game to the opposition and secured the possession from which they launched their fast and skilful backs to great effect. Five tries were scored in all and such was their determination they were extremely disappointed in allowing the IoM to cross their try line. However, the disappointment was soon forgotten as the after match celebrations got into full flow.

The lads were a credit to themselves and represented their club superbly with the IOM selectors and coaches all commenting on the high skill levels of the Kesteven youngsters.

Kesteven Under 15 Tour Squad:

Lawrence Jackson; Josh Pargin; Frankie Davies; Phil Bristow; Mat Cook; Andy McDonald; James Cowley; Tom Melville; Jay Harwood; Jacob Fisher; Grant Ward; Nathan Turner; Sam Thornburn; Olly Wood; Sam Durrance; Charlie Skinner; Dan Barker; Michael Coghill; Cameron Goodrich; Jamie Berry

Thanks go to ABACUS coaches for providing the transport.

Ed's note - we can't over emphasise the success of the tour both on and off the field - and it is superb to see how these lads are developing as a group who are a great credit to the club and their coaches and themselves.

Under 15s

Kesteven RFC 29 - Hinckley 12

Kesteven Under 15s took on a strong Hinckley side for the first time and emerged worthy 29 – 12 winners. In a physical opening period, Ks forwards held their own against a much bigger pack, winning several scrums against the head. Sustained presssure resulted in centre Nathan Turner cutting through the Leicestershire side’s defence for Kesteven’s first try which Michael Coghill converted.

K’s pressed home their advantage when scrum half Ollie Wood scored through a blind side break: Coghill again converted. But Hinckley were in no mood to give up and replied with a try following a determined forward drive. Almost immediately Kesteven struck back when flyhalf Dan Reynolds raced through Hinckley’s defence. The visitors scored again just before the interval which left Kesteven leading 19 – 12 at half time.

K’s then came out determined to extend their lead. Despite relentless presssure, Kesteven kept their discipline and solid defence prevented further Hinckley scores in a hard fought second half. An excellent all round team peformance, in which Ks subs showed their worth, led to 2 further tries for Reynolds.

Kesteven: Coghill, Binder, Thornburn, Turner, McVittie, Reynolds, Wood, Davies, Pargin, Cook, McDonald, Cowley, Harwood, Eggleston, Jackson. Res: Goodrich, Bristow, Melville, Berry.

Under 12s report.

Just want to say a big WELL DONE to K's under 12's who performed brilliantly at the NLD finals day at Derby yesterday. They went through the whole day undefeated, only losing out in a place in the final by try difference to the eventual winners (who we drew against in the group stages). Over the whole day they only conceeded 2 tries and the whole squad performed like demons.Congrats to the new guys in the squad as well, Kieran, Calvin, Sam, and Damian welcome to the Black Army!!

All the coaches are proud of you

Under 11s report - lso from the Website

The Under 11's had a similar experience to the Under 12's. We won our pool, drawing with Paviors (0-0) and then beating Derby 10-5. We then played Nottingham in the semis. Despite having 80% plus of the territory and possession with most of the second half played in the Nottingham half we just couldn't get over the line. Nottingham defended valiantly and the game finished 0-0. The tie was decided on kicks. The first set of five place kicks in front of the posts finished 4-4 as boith sides missed one. Then came five drop goals in front of the posts. We missed one and Nottingham kicked all theirs so they made it through to the final where they beat Stamford 5-0. All the Under 11's coaches were really proud of the effort and commitment shown and with a bit more luck I think we would have made the final and given Stamford a run for their money.
