Your News Millwall 75 - May and Baker 3

MILLWALL Rugby Club stand just one win away from completing their league campaign undefeated after a win on Saturday (February 21).

The Isle of Dogs team, who are already guaranteed the top spot in Essex Division Two, crushed rivals May and Baker 75-3 with a trademark display of running rugby.

Despite being outmuscled at the scrum and lineout, Millwall’s forwards still secured plenty of possession from broken play and set up quick attacks for the backs. May and Baker grabbed a consolation penalty with ten minutes left of the game but for the most part Millwall’s high speed assaults went unanswered, with the prolific winger Naz Mohammed scoring yet another hat-trick.

Millwall centre Tan Parsons said afterwards: “We’re pleased to win but we made a lot of silly mistakes that would have cost us dear against better opposition. That may sound dour but we have to be realistic and look to our cup fixtures as well as building for next year.

“We have one more league game but after that it will be pure hard graft in preparation for the Essex President’s Shield semi final.”

The scoring was opened after some mazy running by the centres when Millwall fullback Gaz Williams dived over in the right corner, hotly pursued by three would-be tacklers.

Next winger Dan Lawrence capitalised on a chip through from Williams, touching down in the left corner. The game stayed fairly close until half time, when the score stood at 28-0. But after the break May and Baker’s lack of fitness began to tell and their defence was routinely split open right across the paddock.

Among the other players to score tries were Dom Sutherland, Brent McMillan, Louis Newton, Drew Benjamin and Ray Walker.

Millwall play Runwell Wyverns away on Saturday (February 28) and if they win by more than 44 points they will finish the season with a points difference of at least 700.
