WEYMOUTH vice-captain Mark Sample felt the 12-12 draw with rivals Bridport was a “missed opportunity” to tighten their grip on top spot in Dorset & Wilts One South.

The Seasiders, whose 12 points at Monmouth Avenue came courtesy of tries from Adam Hoxey and Anthony Cowburn and a Dave Allan conversion, remain a point clear of the second-placed Blues but could find themselves pegged back by Dorchester, who are now only two points adrift but with a game in hand.

Sample said: “I believe we should have won the game, we missed some opportunities to seal it and at one point in the first half we were five metres out but did not execute off the back of the maul well enough.

“It was quite an entertaining match. Bridport have got pacey backs and they tried to get the ball out wide because they didn’t get much joy through the middle.

“We missed a penalty in the second half but we had plenty of opportunities before that to win the game. We played well, it’s just a shame that we weren’t clinical enough.

“It’s not a bad result in the grand scheme of things but a missed opportunity to extend our lead.

“Dorchester have still got a game in hand over us and if they win they’ll be level so it’s going to be very tight. But Dorchester have still got to go to Bridport and Brewery Field isn’t an easy place to go.

“It will be interesting to see what happens from now until the end of the season but I’m sure there are a few more twists and turns to come.”

Dan Trump scored Bridport’s first try before Jack Guilor crossed for the second, which was converted by Freddie Everitt.

Blues’ coach Paul Ninnim said: “A draw was a fair result in the end, both sides missed a few chances to win it.

“I think Weymouth will be more pleased with the draw than we are because I feel this was a really good opportunity for us to get ahead of them. The title race will go down to the wire and this result certainly makes it more interesting.”
