England A 29 Spain 0

England A kicked-off 2009 with a resounding five try win against the full Spanish national team on Saturday at London Welsh RFC.

Kat Merchant, Michaela Staniford and Sarah Beale, who all travel to the San Diego Sevens on Sunday for a final tournament before next month's IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens, all touched down. Worcester's Abi Chamberlain and Elizabeth Riley also added tries.

England A proved to be the dominant team in the attack, and although Spain didn't put any points on the board the visitors put on an impressive defensive display to stop England from scoring several more points.

The host side, who also play France A and the Nomads over the next six weeks, started their winning campaign early with a touch down from Worcester wing Merchant after just five minutes. Merchant's score came after she took the ball from a ruck and darted down the blindside to score in the corner. Chamberlain couldn't add the conversion.

Four minutes later and England had earned a 10-0 lead. This time Wasps wing Staniford took a good clean offload to charge 50 metres down the pitch to score.

Lichfield No. 8 Beale then rounded off half-time for England A after she took a good off-load out wide from Saracens centre Claire Allan to score. Chamberlain this time converted to hand England A a 17-0 lead at the break.

After the restart Spain came back at England and held firm to keep England at bay. Spain too, however, couldn't break the line to score any points.

Young fullback Chamberlain then had her chance with ten minutes remaining when some good work by the forwards saw the Worcester player take the ball and dive over the line. She couldn't convert her own score though.

Wasps replacement Elizabeth Riley then handed England A the victory with the final try of the afternoon. The score came after a poor Spain clearance kick was charged down. Riley then picked up and beat two defenders to score. Chamberlain converted to take the 29-0 victory.

England A Head Coach Mike Barnett said: "This is a good start to the England A campaign. If we thought we could get this kind of result before the start of the match I would have happily taken it.

"Spain were good in defence and we could have scored some more points but we scored some good tries today and the team worked well together on the pitch. We have still got a lot to work on, but this is a good start."
