Dorset & Wilts 3rd Team Cup - Semi final

A classic defensive display from Chippenham, won this encounter and sees them through to the final of this season’s 3rd Team Dorset & Wilts Cup.

Chippenham, playing into the wind created early pressure by attending to good basic drills. Unfortunately, the team vice-captain, Andy Tombs ruptured his knee ligaments and the game was stopped for five minutes whilst he received treatment. Tombs was replaced by Alex Cox and Cox along with Stu King, Stu Catherall and James Cook carried the ball up forcibly to Swanage.

This controlled phases of play for Chippenham was close to being rewarded with the opening try but James Harding was held up over the line. The Chippenham front row of Martin Dick, Dean Atkin and Harding, ensured plenty of good ball in the scrummages, against some handy opponents.

Swanage created a couple of good chances, which was easily cancelled out by the good organisation from Chippenham’s full-back, Nigel Swan, plus the tackling of Ben Chamberlain, Cook, Nick Hoof, Mike Mohan and team skipper, Rob Fielder.

Turning round with the score still level, nerves seemed to get the better of Chippenham and too much possession was kicked away. Rikesh Arithoppah controlled well from the scrum-half position and he was well backed by the lineout jumping of Nick Burroughs.

Various players were struggling through injury as the game went on and with some reluctance, Burroughs had to leave the field, to be replaced by Kevin Audis, who did a sterling job.

In Burroughs’ absence, Liam Snape stood up to the challenge and became a major lineout winner, to go with his all-round coverage of the pitch. A sharp backs move enable space for fleet-footed Mike Mohan to carve a path down the right wing.

This attack gave Chippenham the confidence to pen Swanage down. James Cook took the ball up the middle and with barely seconds remaining, Swanage killed the ball in front of the posts.

Hoof kicked the winning penalty, to snatch victory at the death and create some very happy Chippenham players.

The final will be played on April 19th and Chippenham’s opponents will be Salisbury. The venue has yet to be confirmed.
