MAR

Marlborough continued their current good form with a victory over Supermarine.

Marlborough travelled with a slightly depleted squad, with a few 1st team regulars being rested due to various knocks, but the side pulled together and took an early lead through skipper Jonny Mantle. Mantle crossed the whitewash after great build up play from the Marlborough forwards. Full back Nathan Morgan added the extras for an early 7-0 lead.

With the strong wind in their faces, Marlborough looked to keep the ball with their powerful forwards, who were making yards when allowed freedom to run. A concern for Marlborough ahead of their Dorset and Wilts Plate final on Sunday will be how they were not competing well in the scrimmage, meaning back row pick ups were the order of the day. This ploy however led to 2 more first half tries for number 8 Chris Patterson, to give Marlborough a 17-0 half time lead. Patterson was removed from the action just before half time as a tackle left him with a knee problem.

Marlborough knew that Supermarine would come out with a more attacking attitude in the 2nd half, in order to get back into the game. Unfortunately Marlborough didnít step up another gear, and seemed happy to protect their lead. The game in the 2nd half became a scrappy affair, with the rain making conditions underfoot very slippery, and the ball becoming saturated, producing many knock-ons. The majority of the game was played out in the middle of the park, with the odd break from either side ensuring both teams couldnít afford to switch off. The only score of the 2nd half was a penalty for Marlborough, taken by Morgan.

Supermarine had their best spell towards the end of the 2nd half, where Marlborough were determined not to let the hosts cross the line. Strong defence from Marlborough ensured Supermarine left the pitch without scoring.

Marlborough will be happy to have left with the victory in a scrappy encounter, where there were very minimal glimpses of flowing rugby.

Marlborough play Swindon College Old Boys in the Dorset and Wilts plate final on Sunday (16th March), kick off at 2.30pm at Swindon RFC.
