Your News Sevenoaks announce new coaching supremo

Sevenoaks RFC is pleased to announce the appointment of Ron Standen as Head of its senior coaching team for 2008/09. Standen, a vastly experienced coach at club and county level, has enjoyed success at Sevenoaks before, leading the club to promotion to London and South-East Division 2 in 2005.

The creation of a new Head Coach role is part of an ambitious package of measures announced by the club last month to strengthen its senior playing side. The club has already appointed a player-recruitment manager to undertake targeted recruitment in key positions. The next step will be the appointment of two assistant coaches with complementary rugby specialities to complete the coaching structure and provide the necessary support to Standen.

Sevenoaks has long enjoyed great success with its junior section, having produced over 20 internationals at age-group levels in recent years, as well as two full England internationals, one of whom has gone on to play for the British Lions. Six former Sevenoaks juniors are currently professional rugby players with Premiership or top European sides. The club is immensely proud of what its junior section has achieved over many years and now intends to provide a senior rugby structure that even its very best young players can genuinely aspire to become part of when the time comes.

In his role as Head Coach, Standen will place far more emphasis on improving playing skills throughout the entire club, not just the 1st XV. Key elements of the role will include player management and increasing the interaction between the senior coaching staff and the junior set up to ensure the outstanding talent being produced at junior level has a clear pathway into senior rugby. Continuity between the junior and senior sections has always been good but the club now intends to make it even better in the future.

Standens appointment follows a rigorous selection process which saw applications received from several overseas-based coaches as well as a number of local applicants. Club Chairman Lee Adamson said It was a very thorough and tough recruitment process, which serves only to strengthen Rons appointment. Were delighted to welcome him back to our coaching setup. He is the ideal person to fulfil this new role we have created, particularly now that his busy work commitment has eased following early retirement.

Standen will take up the reigns at the end of this season, following a phased hand-over from existing 1st XV coach Graham Arkley, who is leaving the club due to a career move.
