Saturday 24th January 2009 (League Match)

Yatton 24 - Sidmouth 17

Yatton Scorers - Tries C Edwards, M Harris, C Harris Cons 3 T Hill Pen T Hill

Visitors Sidmouth may only have sat three places above Yatton in the League but they had clocked up seven wins this season against the home sides miserly three. Although facing a bright winter sun and up the slight slope Sidmouth were mainly in Yattons half for the first 20 minutes. But it was Yattons breakouts which did the damage after solid defence.

At 6 minutes wing Chris Semegal-Edwards finished a running attack down the right wing which engaged backs and forwards.

Ten minutes later Sidmouths isolated centre was tackled on a breakthrough within Yattons 22. Seconds later home side centre Mike Harris evaded a committed tackler to touchdown. The two conversions by Tony Hill put Yatton at 14-0 after only 15 minutes of play.

Sidmouth themselves always looked dangerous on the break and there was extra power in the scrums. At the end of the first quarter Hills penalty edged Yatton further ahead. But then the visitors dogged defence denied Yatton through no less than five attacking 5 yard scrums.

In first half injury time Sidmouth were again pinned in the bottom left hand corner with time running out. Both sets of players were committed in the tight area. Then No 8 Russ Hancock caught Sidmouths pressurised clearance kick, flung a long pass in field to try mooching flanker Chris Harris who cantered across the deserted area to touchdown. With Hills conversion bring the score to 24-0 the large crowd of home side supporters were well pleased and confident.

Now it was Yattons turn to face the dying sun in that half of the increasingly churned up muddy pitch. Sidmouth came out of the starting blocks firing on all cylinders and caught Yatton cold. Within the first 9 minutes outside centre Tristan Beavis had crossed over, Dan Retter had converted and scrum half Captain Steve Trim had the presence of mind to chance a quick tap penalty well within Yattons 22 while all others were reorganising. Retters conversion meant that the home sides comfortable lead had been slashed to 10 points within less than as many minutes of the second half.

At the end of the third quarter Retters highly kickable penalty conversion put the visitors within one converted try of equalising with 20 minutes of play left. Home side supporters feared the worst.

But smarting and embarrassed Yatton worked their way up field onto more solid ground and each side battled it out. Sidmouth having some bad luck when a break down field gave them a penalty choice. They choose to kick for the corner but the ball flew just beyond the corner flag and out on the full. Back up field again last minutes tackles or chases to grubber kicks were the order of the remaining half and 8 minutes of injury time.

Both sets of supporters left without finger nails and appreciating that they had watched a good quality, hard fought game of club rugby.
