Having been beaten by over forty points on the away leg and not played since the first weekend last December, both the home team and supporters were not sure what to expect against their visitors Newton Abbott who were match fit and sitting comfortably at third in the league.

With a few regulars missing, due to the unscheduled date of this game, Yatton had a slightly different look and it was a rude awakening which greeted the travelling side. A chip through within the first two minutes gave wing Glen Jones the only try of the match and put the home side on the scoreboard. Unfortunately basement club Yatton had not fielded a recognised kicker and missed the conversion and a penalty minutes later.

For the remainder of the first quarter the play was all Yatton’s, but they struggled to get full advantage on their ball in the scrums.

After 20 minutes the ‘Whites’ worked their way in rolling mauls up the field only to be adjudged holding on within inches of Yatton’s try line. 10 minutes later as the evenly matched teams battled from end to end, Yattons back line itself was stopped inches away reaching out for the visitor’s try line.

But the visitors gained the advantage when Yatton were adjudged offside in front of their own posts and also gave away another kickable penalty on the first half injury time whistle, making the score 5-6 at the turnaround.

The third quarter’s pitch conditions tested fitness levels and neither team made progress until Yatton’s scrum half was yellow carded and the ‘Whites’ slotted another penalty.

Eight minutes later the ‘Whites’ hooker was eventually binned but it was midfield and against the breeze which had developed.

Newton Abbot eventually secured their slender win, thanks to the gift of two wind assisted penalty opportunities in the last six minutes as Yatton risked all to try and snatch an unexpected victory.

This Saturday its back to the normal league schedule; Yatton’s 1st XV face Sidmouth at home. VP’s luncheon at 1-00pm. The 2nds travel to Oldfield and 3rds to Old Reds.

On Sunday Yatton Diamonds (the ladies) continue in the Regional and trials games, Under 17’s face Keynsham at home likewise the Under 16’s face St Brendans and the Under 14’s go to Clifton while the Junior sides meet Weston Hornets also at home.
