Rishworthians promoted as Champions

Match Preview Saturday 8th March Yorkshire 5

Rishworthians will be aiming to virtually seal promotion from Yorkshire Five with a win at Sheffield Medicals. If they achieve the victory it will leave Rotherham Phoenix as the only team in the B section with a mathematical chance of overhauling them provided they win at Halifax Vandals.

Medicals have been the main team to challenge Vandals in the A section of the division and still remain favourites to finish in the play-off position, so will be keen to smash Rishworthians 100 per cent B section league record. It means it could be a close match and Rishworthians will have to be at their best. They will also be hoping to carry on with the solid defence, which has been a foundation of their game and so far seen them keep nine clean sheets in 18 league matches.

The Copley men retain the same squad which has been consistent for much of the season although they will be without impressive centre Fraser Davidson, who is not available through work commitments. Max Prashad is likely to partner Chris Flanagan in the centre after linking successfully with Davidson in the earlier part of the season.

Match Report

Job done. That was the message to Rishworthian players from skipper Gary Morris as they gained promotion to Yorkshire Four. A win alone would have left them virtually certain of the guaranteed promotion place, but when their only rivals Rotherham Phoenix went down to Halifax Vandals it meant they could not be caught in Yorkshire Five Were looking forward to celebrating as champions at our annual dinner at Easter, said Morris. It has been a brilliant season for us, but weve got one more target left to go through the season with a 100 per cent league record. Its one were all determined to achieve. It had also been player-coach Jamie Bloems intention to help the Copley club into the next division, but it was somewhat spoiled when he had to leave the field with a rib injury 10 minutes from time. But his team, with skipper Morris driving them on, had done the work in the first half. The second was scrappy and though the visitors conceded a try they knew when they left the field that promotion was virtually in the bag.

It was never going to be easy for Rishworthians as the home side too are still pressing for a play-off spot in the promotion challenge and right from the start put the visitors under pressure. Solid defence meant that Medicals could only manage a penalty after 10 minutes of pressure. Rishworthians began to get their game together with scrum half Morris making a number of sniping runs. But it was No 8 James Clarke who got the scoreboard ticking over. The home side began to find him a handful with or without the ball. He put in two great tackles to force play back to the Medicals 22. The rest of his pack took it on with flankers Chris Fox and Andrew Bull prominent before Clarke took the ball on the burst from Bloem and crashed over under the posts. Bloem added the conversion and then minutes later Bloem scythed through the home defence to score. Bloem also added the conversion.

Rishworthians were now dominating and more good work by the back row set up the third try. As forward power sucked in the home defenders, the Copley men suddenly spun the ball wide for left wing Nick Faulkner to touch down in the corner. The fierce cross-wind left Bloem with no chance for the conversion.

Half time Sheffield Medicals 0 - 19 Rishworthians

Rishworthians struggled in the second half, spending much of it in defence, but were unlucky to concede a try as a mass of players collapsed over the line. The referee only awarded the score after all the players got up. That aside, the Copley men never looked like conceding further points as the game petered out. Now they can look forward to a couple of friendly fixtures before aiming to finish off their promotion winning league campaign in style.
