The England Under 16 selectors have named a development squad of 40 players to train at the second Divisional Festival at Broadstreet RFC next week (January 23-25) and called an additional 44 to play a trial match on the final day of the get-together.
The development squad of 40 will train with the five England U16 coaches, led by Phil Stanlake, on Friday and Saturday, January 23-24. The breakdown by division is 16 from the South West, 11 from London & South East, 10 from the North and three from the Midlands.
That is followed by the trial match between "Blues" and "Reds" on Sunday January 25 at Broadstreet. The two sides are split broadly North and South respectively with some crossover to even up the numbers.
All 84 players at the second Divisional Festival will be competing for a place among the 60 to be listed for the England U16 development camp at Cokethorpe School in Oxfordshire on February 6-8. Following that, the England U16 and U16 A squads will be named for a series of development sessions and practice matches leading up to this season's international fixtures in April.
Lloyd Morgan, chairman of the England U16 selectors, said: "We are happy with the standard we have seen so far this season, in the county matches and last weekend's first Divisional Festival at Moseley, and every one is looking forward to seeing how the boys shape up at Broadstreet."
The South West won both their matches in the first Divisional Festival at Moseley RFC, defeating the Midlands 35-15 (January 9) and London & South East 5-0 (Jan 11).
