Your News Yatton 2XV 15 - Weston Hornets 2XV 10

With the prolonged deep seated frost reluctant to move from most pitches frustrated followers of local rugby were pleased to see that Yattons husbandry of their main pitch had paid off. Supporters had to wait until quarter of an hour before kick off when the referee decided Clevedons pitch was not playable so the keenly awaited First XV league match between Clevedon and Yatton was rescheduled to the 7th February and rugby enthusiasts reconvened at Yatton where the 2nd XVs of Yatton and Weston Hornets had the honour of starting the first competitive senior matches of 2009.

Hornets had the advantage of the slight slope and wind for the first half and came out at halftime with 5 points in their favour to nil. With apparently an average age of 22 in their pack Hornets had some fine future players on display but captain Hugh Leyshon marshalled his homeside troops and Yatton, having traded a try with the visitors, forced their way in front when No8 Tony Cottle, making Yattons pack average age nearly fourty, all on his own, rumbled over the line under the posts from short range with 20 minutes to go. Yattons lead of 12-10 was later increased by a well struck penalty conversion and the keen supporters were pleased with the efforts and spirit of both teams who served up the Saturday afternoon rugby fix for them.

This Saturday Yatton 1st XV receive third in the league Newton Abbot, apparently always unlucky according to their match reports. The 2nds face North Bristol at home and the 3rds travel to Winscombe. The 1st XV game starts with a two course hot sit down meal for all paid-up Vice Presidents and invited guests at 1-00pm with Kick-off at 2-30.
