Yatton 6 - Weston Hornets 6

Before the game Yatton and Weston Hornets were 5th and 4th from the bottom of the South West 2 West division. Last season Hornets were saved from relegation by a re-jig of the teams in each division and Yatton gained promotion by finishing as champions of Western Counties North.

Yatton had the benefit of the driving wind in the first half but it was over kicking and the Hornets pack which kept them pinned within their own half until the 40th minute.

As the forwards battled it out, Hornets two missed penalty conversions in the first quarter would eventually prove to be expensive. But it was Yattonís last minute tackles, despite being reduced by a yellow card to fourteen men on the twentieth minute, which kept the scoreboard clean.

Yattonís breakout minutes after the binning and Tony Hillís penalty from just inside his own half put them first on the board. Yatton lost another player for a retaliation incident just before the half time whistle, turning around at 3-0.

Ten minutes into the second-half, Hornets with a change of kicker drew level when John Gallagher used the wind to dissect the uprights for his penalty conversion.

As the second half developed Yatton gained some territorial advantage but their attacks were snuffed out. With five minutes to go, Hillís second penalty put the home side in front again only to see the visitors draw level through James Cox minutes later.

Forced mistakes by Hornets within Yattonís 22 finished this well fought evenly matched local derby encounter between two basement clubs and the league position remained the same.
