Your News Old Alleynians beat auld enemy beaten to secure second spot in Surrey1

Old Alleynians FC 27 (10) [T: Boyle (2), Foster, Kent, Van der Westhuizen; C: Docherty]

Old Whitgiftians RFC 7 (7) [1T; 1C]

A dominant second half performance secured the season double over Old Whitgiftians and with Croydon losing at home to Battersea Ironsides, Old Alleynians are now guaranteed the runners-up spot in Surrey One and a promotion play-off game next month.

Playing with the considerable wind advantage in the first half Old Alleynians struggled to transfer possession and territory into points. Despite the ascendancy in the scrum, a few unforced errors and lack of clinical finishing let a few chances go begging. Old Alleynians did open the scoring in the right hand corner through Foster, and despite an Old Whitgiftian try in one of their rare visits to the Old Alleynian 22 from a quick tap penalty, Boyle restored the lead with a try in the left corner. Martin and Barnes were also narrowly held up in goal and Old Alleynians took a 10-7 lead into the interval.

Often playing into the wind galvanises a side and Old Alleynians produced an excellent all round second half display scoring seventeen unanswered points. Spurred on by the sin binning of the Old Whitgiftian Number 8 for the second of two premeditated high challenges mid way through the half, Old Alleynians extended their lead when Van der Westhuizen drove over from close range for his first try of the season.

Old Whitgiftians rallied briefly and had a number of line outs close to the Old Alleynian try line but strong close range defence thwarted any advances and the ball was turned over. The reliable Old Alleynian line out and scrum secured possession for most of the afternoon and it was Kent who was next on the score sheet when he reacted first to a loose ball at the back of a retreating scrum and with the conversion successful the lead increased to 22-7. Old Alleynians completed an excellent second half display with a try from Boyle and with it a comfortable 27-7 home victory.
