Your News Ilford dampen Milwall's league hopes

Ilford Wanderers inflicted a 39-10 defeat on Millwall RFC on Saturday as the Isle of Dogs club struggle to save their season from ending in relegation.

The visitors struck first with a well worked forward try from a maul after just 11 minutes but Millwall got on the score board after being awarded a penalty inside the opposition half. Fullback Ben Murphy took full advantage of the wind, booting over a penalty goal 16 minutes in.

Fly half Dan Lawrence continued his brilliant season with a solo try in the 21st minute, which was converted by Murphy.

Ilford grabbed a push over try in the 34th minute and Millwall had a chance to respond through a breakaway drive from winger Ben Smith although he was bundled into touch just short of the line, leaving the score tied 10-10 at the break.

The second half was dominated by Ilford as they ran in 5 unanswered tries. Millwall went close a few times but mistakes cost them close to the opposition line.

Coach Dave Leftley was happy with the first half performance but was critical of the mistakes made in the second half:

We had good set pieces and I thought our defence was good in the first half, sadly it just fell apart as the game went on.

Weve got two weeks now to regroup for our next league match against East London and ball control is something well definitely be working on at training he said.

Meanwhile the Llamas put up a valiant fight against Stanford Le Hope but were defeated 35-31 with only 14 men on the field and Millwalls 3rd XV stormed home in the second half of their league match against Brentwood IIIs but it wasnt enough to stop the visitors from running out 15-10 victors.

Trailing 10-0 at half time with their season on the line, the home side rallied behind some strong runs from centres James Wakefield and AJ McCann, with Wakefield grabbing two tries.

Millwalls effort to promote the sport to Ladies continues to be successful. The next TRY Rugby session is planned for 29th of March from 10:30am on Millwall Park near Mudchute DLD station. Any ladies interested in trying something different should visit or email alternatively, call 07963833655
