Your News South Woodham Ferrers 0 - Beccles 7

SWF travelled to Beccles with a depleted squad through injury

and unavailability and had to call upon quadragenrians Dieter Parry

Darren Laing and Andy Collins to bolster the team. Woodham decided

to play with the arctic wind and rain behind them. It was obvious that

the conditions, coupled with a quagmire of a pitch ,it was not going

be conducive to Woodham's fast flowing game. Beccles had the better

start ,controlling the early exchanges with their big ball carrying forwards and

making hard yards against the elements. SWF inability to put boot to ball

and play percentage rugby allowed the home team to put the visitors under

pressure. On the few occasions Woodham did move the ball, they where

halted by a well organised rush defence. As half time loomed, the visitors

tried to run the ball from their own 22. The spilt ball at the break down gave

Beccles an attacking scrum in front of the posts. Beccles secure scrum gave

good ball for a simple backs move to break a normally tight defence. The

conversion was well taken.

Half time 0-7

Playing into the sub-zero driving rain, Woodham had their best period of play

having Beccles camped on their own line with a number of scrums. However, a lack

of good decision making at crucial times allowed the home team to escape.

The game became a centre field battle of attrition with both sets of forwards

refusing to give any quarter but with the conditions contriving to so many

mistakes it was inevitable the game turned into a stalemate. With the light

failing and time running out, Woodham tried to run the ball from deep. But with

a frozen back line the ball was uncharactisicly dropped on every occasion.

Final score 0-7.

After Woodham's first defeat in 8 games, the squad need to raise their commitment

before next week's away game at Bllericay on their infamous heavy sloping pitch.
