Your News Deepings 17 - Huntingdon 27

In Arctic conditions Deepings met Huntingdon in the Hunts and Peterborough Cup on Saturday afternoon. With crowd pleasers such as Wainwright, Shaw and Maslem returning from injury and back in action Deepings spectators had even more reason to leave the warmth of their homes to see the Green Machine.

The game proved to be a real spectacle and delivered the kind of end to end rugby deserving of a county cup. Deepings try scorers included Oli Peacock, Lance Charity and Karl Maslem.

The real drama came in the last 5 minutes of normal time with the scores level at 17-17 all. Tensions started to boil over, which resulted in three players in the sinbin and a penalty in front of the post for the visitors. With seconds remaining the Huntingdon fly half stepped up and blazed the kick wide.

With extra time ahead and it already getting dark, it was a race against the clock to fulfil the required 20 extra minutes. Not long into the first half a handling mistake in midfield gave the visitors a gift, allowing them to stroll in and take the lead. The game was then killed off in the last few minutes to send Huntingdon through to the next round and an easy route to the final.
