Your News Millwall keep up winning ways by beating Ilford

Millwall Rugby Club kept up their winning ways on Saturday (November 22) with a victory over Ilford in the Essex Presidents Shield competition.

The Isle of Dogs men travelled to meet their opponents, who currently play their rugby one tier above Millwall in Essex Division One. After a physical match Millwall ran out winners by 18 points to 11.

Millwall centre Tan Parsons said after the match: To come and beat Ilford on their home turf in a cup game is fantastic. Their style of rugby was grisly and it was a great pleasure to win by playing some expansive moves and scoring all our tries through our outside players in the backs.

But I give huge credit to our forwards and especially newcomer and man of the match Baz Clarke, who stepped up and confronted the opposition at every opportunity. Winning Essex Division Two is our priority this season, but cup games are where you have to step up a notch.

Millwall opened up an early lead in the match, playing with the wind, when fly half Dom Sutherland knocked over a penalty ten minutes in. Soon after he added to this by charging down a defensive Ilford kick, then gathered the ball and touched down to the right of the posts. But the conversion was missed and Ilford cut the deficit with two well-taken penalties, bringing the score to 8-6 in Millwalls favour at half time.

In the second half Millwall fullback Ben Smith scored a try following a superb run from winger Naz Mohammed. Ilford fought back and scored a try from an ugly rolling maul, bringing the score to 13-11 in Millwalls favour. But it was to prove the home sides last score of the day and Mohammed rounded off a great performance by dotting down in the right hand corner to seal the victory.

Millwall next play Burnham on Crouch in Essex Division Two on December 6.
