Your News Verwood 13 - Bournemouth University 15

Verwood’s director of Rugby Mike Cockram decided to test several younger players this week against the University students and all stepped up to be counted in a thrilling match played in good spirit.

Dan Moor, Verwood’s young captain, set a fine example by moving from fly half to the front row in order to avoid uncontested scrums following Ian Mackrell’s withdrawal at half time. Big Mac who has just returned from injury caused when putting his socks on at the Isle of Wight match, failed to put the right amount of deep heat on for a whole game.

Two other players made their debut - Jonathan Rhodes and Sam Linford. Rhodes’ late grandfather Roger Corbett was the original patron of Verwood Rugby Club and was known too many in Verwood for keeping wicket for many years after the war.

Verwood conceded an early penalty for going over the top 0-3 to the students. Worse was to follow when Dan Moor’s clearing kick (Cipriani style!!) was charged down and gathered for a score under the posts. 0-10.

As regular spectators know, Verwood do not roll over these days and began pressing the students immediately and Tim Linford scored an excellent try to make the Linford household go home happy. 5-10 at halftime. Following the withdrawal of Mackrell the pack was reshuffled and Moor replaced him with Karl Jensen going to fly half.

Verwood continued to press and following a quick penalty Darren ‘Magic’ Kendall scored out wide 10-10. Under increasing pressure Bournemouth University conceded a penalty to make the score 13-10 to the home side.

With only minutes to go Verwood lost a shortened lineout on the student’s 5 metre line and following a swift counter attack the university gained a lineout in Verwood’s 22. The ball was thrown to the front and tapped back to the hooker who scored out wide. Final score 13-15 to Bournemouth university students.

Man of the Match Andre Jensen.
