Your News London South Africa beat London Irish

On Saturday 15 November London South Africa’s first XV – the Warriors took on a feisty London Irish Amateur team – the Wild Geese on their first visit to Imber Court. The good weather meant a big crowd turned out to see the two sides battle it out and they were not disappointed.

The game got off to a quick start when Irish put the first penalty of the match over right from the word go. It was a message of intent, and London South Africa was under no illusions – this would be a fight to the finish. A good attacking build-up featuring some quick hands by the backs led to The Warriors’ first try with an intrepid move by the winger tap-dancing around the L.I.A. defense to cross the line. A quick conversion followed and LSA was leading with 7 points to 3.

The visitors countered and LSA made mistakes and were penalised for technical offences resulting in two quick penalties. But this was only temporary as the LSA squad – decked out in their gleaming white kit, raced to put pressure on the Wild Geese. It paid off with a penalty for LSA resulting from sloppy play by the visitors in the 40th minute taking the half time score to 10 – 9 in their favour.

With a good team talk at half time, the second half was underway. The LSA forwards were playing a tight game with the front five holding firm to give the back row plenty of time to exploit their options. The line outs were working well for LSA and although Irish opened the score with a penalty they were playing to their new game plan.

In the 30th minute LSA showed what they were made of with a second scintillating try and conversion to increase the score to 17 - 12. The Wild Geese looked tired but somehow penetrated the LSA defense to score their first try and bring the scores level with only minutes to go. The Warriors held firm under immense pressure and added the winning 3 points with a final penalty in the 33rd minute to bring the final victorious score to 20 – 17!

Team Manager Trevor Johnson explained that the game plan was adapted earlier in the week and it clearly paid off. “The guys were enjoying themselves despite it being a very physical match today. They should be very pleased with the result”. He also added that there were several key players missing this week and that the next game against London Irish in a month’s time will be a true reflection of the strength of the squad. Well done LSA!
