Exmouth were lucky to have started with the advantage of the wind and to have so efficiently exploited Yattons sluggishness and lack of tackling skills in the first 10 minutes.

Having missed a penalty conversion at 5 minutes the Cockles first try came three minutes later when Captain Mark Wathes broke through and Dale Sleeman finished off . Richard Cadywood converted.

Minutes later Jack Downie scored in the corner after a close range scrum. But the visitors were showing signs of waking up as it became evident that close quarter antics were being used.

There were no further easy points for the League leaders until the fiftieth minute because Yatton, having largely shaken off basic errors and lack of understanding, kept the homeside more than occupied by driving forward play.

As frustration grew in the homeside pack, for what they had expected to be a walk in the park turned into sheer hard work, an Exmouth player was yellow carded.

Yatton failed to have the luck of the draw when well within their own 22, from the back of a maul, their winger was set free with no opposition in front but was adjudged to have received a forward pass and, minutes later, seconds before halftime with the oppositions pack well beaten Yatton were adjudged to have knocked on at the back, when rumbling over the try line from a scrum.

At 50 minutes a chip through kick helped Codywood touchdown and convert for Exmouth.

But seconds later stand-in scrumhalf Anthony Harris executed his trademark box kick, gathered the bounce and grounded. Tony hill made sure of the conversion.

With more than 30 minutes left Yattons tight play frequently left the cockles all at sea and it appeared that every excursion into the homesides 22 resulted in a flare up of players, but no penalties were offered and no points achieved. Yatton lost their Captain to the bin during the last quarter.

This Saturday will prove to be a vital match for both sides. Yatton entertain Weston Hornets with both teams being level in fourth place above the bottom. Arrive early for the Vice Presidents Luncheon and parking.
