Euen Holden had a near full strength side available to play this away fixture against the students. The wind was going to prove a major advantage in the game and Melbourne started the match with this firmly in their favour,

It was the students who took the game to Melbourne using their forwards to try and punch holes in the Melbourne defence, when Melbourne did get the ball they were too often turned over. As much as the students had the early possession they couldn't find any gaps in the resolute defence and Melbourne soon started to piece together some good moves and were finally rewarded with a penalty from Holden and soon after the first try of the afternoon scored by Ashley Stringer, Holden converted to give Melbourne a 10:0 lead.

This opening try seemed to demoralise the students and Melbourne kept the scoreline ticking over for the remainder of the half with further scores from:

Stringer 3, Lucas 1, Middleton 1,

Half Time: Melbourne 43 : 0 Derby Uni

The second half and with the wind firmly in their faces Melbourne continued where they had finished the first half and were soon rewarded with further tries from:

Lucas 2, Stringer 1, Birchall 1, Lakin 1. Holden finishing with 7 conversions.

This was a good all round team performance from Melbourne, they dominated the scrums and ruck and maul area, the backs played with confidence and pieced together some excellent moves and the defence from the whole side was solid for 80 minutes.

The club's leading try scorer is now hotting up as we get to the last few weeks of the season, the main contenders are:

Ashley Stringer: 14 (age 22, Winger)

Ian Lucas: 13 (Much older than 22, No 8)

Paul Devaney: 9 (age 22, Scrum half)

League action continues this next weeks with Nottinghamians visiting Cockshut Lane.
