NOV

With the advantage of the breeze and a slight slope on the pitch Winlaton kicked off and began aggressively immediately building up a head of steam, taking the ball on through the forwards and putting WhitleyBay Rockliffe under pressure. Two early moments of opportunism gave the Vulcans a chance to take the lead. An easy penalty, by Kevin Allisonís standards, was awarded for offside on 5mins but the effort went narrowly wide. However on 10 mins of further good work another penalty was given and Kevin Allison landed the kick{3pts] This seemed to galvanise the home side and they started to run the ball back at Winlaton exposing their rather weak defence. Instead of sticking to the game plan and using the elements to gain territory wrong options were being taken resulting in Winlaton spending the next quarter in their own half defending and only good work by David Scott and Luke Mitchell prevented a score. On 25 mins the pressure told and after a kick failed to find touch the Rockliffe winger took the ball ran 30 metres and touched down in the corner [5pts] the conversion hitting the posts. It was more of the same and on 28mins Rockliffe converted an easy penalty for handling in the ruck. A further period of sustained pressure on the Winlaton line occurred and a series of 5 metre scrums took place but after stout defence by the Winlaton forwards the danger was cleared. With four minutes of the half left the Vulcans broke out after absorbing lots of pressure and they got their reward when after a scintillating break by Mitchell was stopped just short of the line the forwards backing up won the ball and Andy Robinson drove through two Rockliffe tacklers and crashed over.[5pts] + 2pts when Kevin Allison landed the conversion.

Half Time 8pts - 10pts

Winlaton began the second half aggressively with Robinson driving forward and David Scott trying to initiate attacks after collecting a number of high balls. But for all the endeavour and effort tries were in short supply. As in the first half Winlaton seemed to lose their way and again weak or none existent tackling allowed the Rockliffe full back to run past several defenders to score under the posts[5pts+2pts] with an easy conversion on 20mins This again led to another period of defence by Winalton during which David Scott was solid. On 25 mins the visitors line was breached after a series of tapped penalties allowed Rockliffe to cross in the corner [5pts] the conversion missed. The last quarter the Vulcans came more into the game and after being awarded a series of penalties and forward drives they attacked the home line but good defence by Rockliffe foiled Winlatonís vain attempt to register a consolation score.

Final Score 22 - 10

Comment. Another lack lustre performance when a game plan was not adhered to and poor defence at crucial moments allowed an average opposition to win the game.
