Your News Weymouth look forward to meeting old rivals

When Weymouth and Dorchester rugby clubs go head to head at Coburg Road Dorchester on Saturday (kick off 2.30pm) in a top of the Dorset and Wilts. division one clash it will be the first time the two south Dorset clubs have met on equal status for the best part of 20 years.

With the emergence of the former Courage leagues back in the late 1980s both clubs were allotted places in the old Berkshire Dorset and Wilts. premier division from which Dorchester won promotion early doors eventually progressing up the league pyramid into Courage South West division one.

Then in the mid 1990s the County Town narrowly missed out on a Twickenham Intermediate cup final loosing to out Dunstablians at the semi final stage while Weymouth all but for one season in the old Southern Counties league have remained where they began their league campaign.

With four former Seasiders in the Dorchester line up including a past Weymouth captain, prop Steve Hodgson and three former County Towners turning out for Weymouth there will be a great deal of local pride at stake.

Dorchester coach Mike Sprules is praying for a dry day as he thinks that it will benefit his team while Weymouth skipper Tony Worle is playing the whole game down saying that it is just another match with a couple of league points at stake.
