A makeshift Malvern side, hit by last minute non-availability, made the long trip to Exmouth, who needed a bonus point win to ensure home play-off advantage. With a bare 15 players available, some of whom who had not played for some months, they were always going to be up against it. Suffice it to say that the game was a total mis-match, Exmouth popping the ball with abandon and running through a keen but very much inferior Malvern back line. Despite the rout which the score line suggests, Malvern can take away several plus points from the match. The scrum, featuring 49 year old Steve Cooper, held firm all afternoon and Wayne Prosser’s accurate throwing meant Malvern won far more ball at the line-out than in previous weeks. The Exmouth crowd were appreciative of the fact that Malvern never gave up trying and applauded the team’s spirit. After the game, Head Coach Nick Tisdale, who had also been pressed into playing a full 80 minutes, said that Malvern now draw a line through the league season and focus instead on the North Midlands Cup, where the have a semi-final away at Worcester Wanderers. This will take place on May 4th, as Worcester have a play-off against Ilkeston this coming Saturday. Should Malvern win, then they will feature in the Cup Final on 11th May at Dudley Kingswinford’s ground.
