Wimbledon extended their eight point lead over fifth-placed Hove by a further five points with a thoroughly deserved but hard-fought win on Hove’s mud-bath of a pitch.

In such conditions the game could easily have degenerated into a dour slog, but the excellent performance of former international referee David Sainsbury kept it flowing and allowed Wimbledon to display their attacking style, excellent ball retention and sterling defence.

Captain Chris Lewis opened the scoring with a fine individual try run in from his own half and a pushover try soon after, touched down by no.8 Karl Roche, gave Dons a comfortable lead at half time. In the second half, the ball retention and resulting pressure produced a try well-taken by wing Peter Scott – and near the end of an enthralling match Roche scored again, this time from loose play. As ever, no.10 Neil Hallett contributed to the scoreline, with a conversion and one penalty.

There is no match over the Easter weekend and the next will be on April 6th at home to Havant.
