FEB

Blaydon consolidated their second place in the table with this convincing 4 tries to 2 win at the St Albans ground and would have had a much greater winning margin had they been able to convert relentless pressure in the final quarter into points.

The opening half-hour was also all Blaydon with the forwards in total command, and just as he had in the home encounter in October it was flank-forward Robert Bell who scored the two opening tries. Both came from a catch and drive at a line-out and whilst the opposition knew what was coming they were powerless to prevent it.

In contrast to the Blaydon power play the home side persevered with a running game in the closing minutes of the half and pulled back seven points although ironically it was scored by a forward. When Blaydon lost possession on half-way the Old Albanians ran it to the 22 for hooker Brett McNamee to touch down and fly-half Lawrence Raynor add the conversion.

Leading 7-14 at the break Blaydon were soon back in control and increased their advantage with a sensational effort from teenage winger Zach Kiribige. A long clearance by Jamie Guy was caught by Tom Jeffery who spotted Kiribige in space out wide and put in his own kick which the winger collected on the full and outstripped three defenders in an explosive burst to the line.

On 55 minutes however the home side again closed the gap this time through replacement prop forward Matt Cranston who rumbled over from close range with Raynor again converting.

But that was to be it for the opposition as Blaydon piled on the pressure and deservedly grabbed a 4th and bonus point winning try when Keith laughlin emerged from a ruck 20 metres out and stormed over with fly-half Guy landing a 4th successful conversion.
