Your News Doncaster Phoenix 10 - West Leeds 13

This Saturday saw Phoenix host its first sporting lunch of the season in support of Ed Crowe and Phoenix's chosen charity this Season being the Doncaster Neo Natal unit and on that score the day was a success.

Unfortunately on the field Phoenix couldn't complete the day and were narrowly beaten by an again evenly matched West Leeds outfit.

Phoenix started off lively enough with the forwards led by the back row of Germain, Taylor and Oliver providing punching runs to make good yards. Conversely the Leeds side defended well and after 20 minutes it was honours even with both sides converting a penalty a piece.

Phoenix then took the lead again courtesy of the pack who gained field position going blind down the right to be held short 8 yards out. From the ensuing scrum Number 8 Germain collected and broke blind to evade the defence and with Millar converting made 10-7 at the break.

West Leeds came out much on the offence where they opted to push around the fringes of the loose and make yards. with the this pressure they maintained field postion and appeared Phoenix were up to the task in their defence with Stuart at full back performing well under the high ball. However it was a little grubber kick that broke the home defence and allowed the left winger to scamper around the flank and wind the race to touch down, with a difficult kick the Leeds fly half equalised in style.

West Leeds now on the up then added what were to be the winning points with a drop goal from the fly half 13-10.

For the last twenty Phoenix did pick up the pace but were guilty of not using the width of the pitch, a wrongly judged kick or dropped pass that saw the fruits of their labour prove intfertile. To epitomise the day they were awarded a penalty just to the right of the sticks which Millar failed to convert and thus West Leeds won the day.

In summary, Phoenix know they could have won this but wil need to look at themselves and stop going for fifty yard kicks when 30 yards going dead will suffice and sympathy to the wingers whom I dont think recieved a direct pass in the eighty minutes of play.
