CALDY RFC on the Wirral will be the focus of attention tomorrow (Wednesday, January 30, 2.45) among Cheshire schools rugby aficionados as Paton field hosts a keenly-anticipated Daily Mail Schools Under 18 Cup clash between Wirral Grammar School and Kings School, Macclesfield.

Kings go into the game with only one blemish to an outstanding record this season a 26-26 draw against Kirkham Grammar in their last game but despite being drawn away in five of their six Daily Mail ties, they have progressed to the last 16 and include wins at Barnard Castle, Manchester Grammar and Sandbach in their successes.

The normal fixture between the schools was a victim of the half-term arrangements this season and with Wirral also boasting a solid string of wins in the Daily Mail, victories of QEGS Wakefield and Lymm High in the last two rounds underlining the calibre of the side, a keen tussle seems assured.

Also through to the Quarter-finals are county neighbours Wilmslow High, who overcame much-fancied Durham School 19-14 in the previous round with a brace of tries and three penalty goals. Their reward is a home tie against Warwick School, former winners of the trophy, which is scheduled for tomorrow week (February 6) at Wilmslow.

Warwick reached their first Quarter-final for four years when they defeated Stamford School 12-0 to avenge a defeat earlier in the season.

Englands Ben Foden will be keeping an eye on the result tomorrow at Bishop Heber High School. He is an old boy of the school, which includes wins of Wilmslow High, Lancaster RGS and Bradford Grammar en route to the Quarter-finals, but which is moving into uncharted territory with the visit of St Pauls from Barnes in London.

They have a 24-19 win at Whitgift in the previous round to underline their credentials.

The other Northern interest focuses on Queen Elizabeths Grammar, Wakefield, who travel to Kings School, Grantham in the hope of claiming a Last Eight place in the shape of a long trip to London Oratory School.

Elsewhere tomorrow, schools involved in the two Vase competition are trying to catch up with the original schedule, which has been decimated by the recent poor weather.
