Your News Swanage & Wareham 18 - Newbury Blues 21

Swanage & Wareham welcomed bottom of the table club Newbury Blues to Bestwall in the latest game in Southwest 1 (East).

Swans started by putting the visitors under some pressure and Swans went ahead when a chip beyond the Newbury back line was seized upon as centre Darren Wilcox was first to the ball to score his first try of the game in the corner after 7 minutes. (5 0). A couple of penalties to Newbury took them within 5 metres of the Swans line, and from a catch/drive move, flank forward Harry Bate powered his way over the line after 16 minutes. Fly half Dan Thorne added the extras.(5 7). For much of the rest of the first half play was pretty much evenly fought, but Newburys fly half kept them in the game with his prodigious kicking. Swans had a couple of breaks, but were denied by mishandling, but with two minutes to go to the break Swans fly half Charlie Parish landed a penalty to send Swans into half time leading by 8pts 7 pts.

Swans stated the second half by giving away a penalty from the kick off which Dan Thorne put over and then two minutes later Thorne landed a second penalty goal giving the visitors an 8 13pts advantage.

Newbury then had the upper hand and seemed to take much of the play to Swans. Another penalty to Newbury down into Swans 22, and following the line out a scrum was formed, and from this scrum, Newbury scrum half Toby Thorne worked his way over the try line to give Newbury the advantage by 8pts 18pts after 57 minutes. The visitors relaxed a bit and in the last ten minutes Swans came back at them. Charlie Parish firstly kicked a penalty goal to at least give Swans a chance of a losing bonus point, but almost from the restart a break by Swans split the Newbury defence, and once again Darren Wilcox was on hand to collect the pass and scored his second try of the afternoon. Parish added the conversion to tie up the scores at 18pts 18pts, with 4 minutes left. Just as Swans were looking to get a draw, in the last minute Swans were penalised and once again Dan Thorne hit the penalty to deny Swans, as Newbury took the honours by 18pts 21pts.
